Konstantin, I reply in detail because your note is automatically stored in our archive. My reply is intended for readers of your note whom it may confuse. Would you please CONFIRM that your modem based on a Lucent 1646 (aka 11c1:0448 pcid), works with the SmartLink driver? Of course, it DOES work with the Ltmodem driver found at http://www.heby.de/ltmodem The modem with which you played: > The modem I played with has vendor id 0x8086 (Intel) and dev. id 0x24C6 > (Chip No.: "82801DB", Chip desc.: "AC97 Modem Controller"). seems to me to definitely be something else than the Lucent 1646 DPS modem.. At http://www.heby.de/ltmodem I can read: On this page you'll find Linux driver (sources, binary packages) and documentation for so called Winmodems with Lucent Apollo (ISA) and Mars (PCI) chipsets. Lucent AMR modems are not supported by this driver The Lucent 1646 is a DSP modem of the Mars family. The one which you played with is an AMR modem, perhaps coming from Lucent. Not being supported by the DSP ltmodem driver is not the same as not being supported AT ALL. We recommend all users who want to ask questions or raise issues on this forum to pick up the scanModem utility from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il and include the file ModemData.txt in their post to the discussion list. If you would just do it, and read ModemData.txt yourself, you would see that scanModem WILL NOT suggest you to use the ltmodem driver (aka www.heby.de/ltmodem) and WILL suggest you to TRY the SmartLink driver. Finally, contrarily to what you may believe, the SmartLink driver works with SOME modems made with the MODEM chip very poorly identified by you as: > vendor id 0x8086 (Intel) and dev. id 0x24C6 > (Chip No.: "82801DB", Chip desc.: "AC97 Modem Controller" but FAR FROM ALL. Mind you, the two lines above reproduced from your post do not even suggest that the modem which you played with indeed uses a Lucent chip. See http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/datashts/290744.htm for details on chip 82801DB. ModemData.txt lists a number of manufacturers whose modem chips are a component of an Intel 0x8086:0x24c6 larger chip which includes a modem. Agere is in the list, along with several others however. Careful reading of ModemData.txt will explain more. To summarize, I believe that your mail creates some unnecessary confusion about Linux support for Lucent chipsets.
