Linmodems (2)
Contributed by Deno on Tuesday November 28, @ 07:49AM
from the kind-of-usefull dept.

Winmodems are crap, and binary only modules are evil and we can not offer you any formal support when you run in trouble with these beasts, but you should already know this, so lets go on. As I already said, there are people out there working on linux support for winmodems, with more-or-less success.

Interesting part of the story is that I recently got two confirmations for winmodems working in 7.2 distribution. First one was for Lucent modem and the second for Conexant (Rockwell) HSF modem. Unfortunaltely, I have no details about Lucend modem success story - this was all I got:

Carlo writes "Dear all, the very beautyfull story, my Ltmodem, work on mandrake 7.2. After 1 week of hard work, the lucent winmodem is working very well. Thanks mandrake. "

The second case is much better documented: Connectant (Rockwell) HSF modems apparently work with binary-only driver provided by Olitec, and it is even possible to use these drivers with 2.2.17 kernels after a bit of "black magic" is performed:

Some time ago, Olitec has made a binary-only driver for their modems available, and I reported this to Rob. He imediately added the driver to a table of "linmodem drivers", shouting "great, this should also work with other Conexant/Rockwell HSF (SoftK56) modems"!

Apparently he was right. Magnus Martensson was a first person to report a succes story to Rob, and he happened to be using LM 7.2, which shows that olitech drivers work with 2.2.17 kernel too. Yesterday I got a second confirmation from Andreas Kluemper. He started with Martensons description, and managed to get his modem working on Compaq Presario 1600 running SuSe 7.0 (2.2.16 kernel).

Disclaimer I hope this information will be of some use to unhappy owners of crapmodems, but don't blame me if it doesn't, and please don't send me any "how do I get my winmodem working" emails: I have neither means nor particular wish to test winmodems, and I'm getting all the comments to this article by mail, so if you have something to tell me just write it here.

Sometimes it isn't our choice
by Michael Portuesi (portuesi@xnospamx.sirius.com) on Tuesday, November 28 @08:12AM
I own an IBM ThinkPad 240. I bought it because it was powerful, small and light, and cheap.

I really didn't care about the built-in modem much at all, but it turns out it has one of the Lucent winmodems.

The point here is that sometimes we don't get to choose the modem that's in our boxes. Sometimes its integrated by the manufacturer, as in the case of my ThinkPad, and there's not much one can do about it. Or else someone has a Dell or Gateway box that came with a winmodem as standard equipment. Or else the person who purcahsed the box didn't know the difference. Whatever.

It's not unreasonable for folks owning a Winmodem to want to make it work, as much as it isn't unreasonable for Mandrake to say "there's not a lot we can do about it".

Personally, if I really needed a modem on my ThinkPad, I would just go out and buy a PCMCIA modem card and be done with it. The advantage is that it would work, and I could still upgrade my OS without breaking the modem.

Working Lucent winmodem
by Gixxer (gixxer@coatesjc.screaming.net) on Tuesday, November 28 @11:46AM
I got my Lucent winmodem working under Mandrake 7.1
I use the Lucent binary driver from www.close.u-net.com/ltmodem.html

and the hacked ppp module appropriate to kernel 2.2.15 from www.heby.de/computer/ltmodem

using "insmod slhc" and then "insmod -f ppp" at the end of my rc.local script loads them nicely

I use kppp and make sure /dev/modem points to ttyS14 (the Lucent driver) and connect through /dev/modem at 230,400 cps

It took me a good few attempts to figure this out but, like lots of hardware, it works faster under Linux than under Win98

Power to the penguin :-)

Linmodem driver
by Plamen Hadzhiyski (phadzhiyski@abv.bg) on Wednesday, November 29 @04:00AM
Hi everyone!
I have managed to install the lindriver for my Conexant/Rockwell HSF (SoftK56) winmodem. The only problem is that I cant let the modem pulse dialing, but always become tone dialing. If anybody knows how to resolve this problem, please answer me.
Thanks in advance.

Binary drivers

One of the VERY RARE things I feel MS did right in Win9x (until WinME) was drivers that did not require builds against a specific kernel. Win9x 32 bit drivers don't care which of the 27 flavors of Win9x you have.

The point: I really believe Linux would get far more drivers if loading "kernel generic" binary drivers was possible.

Yes, open source is far better, but the real world seems to cause a real problem here.

Regarding using the linmodem driver
by Venkatesh (prvenkat@ureach.com) on Sunday, December 03 @02:13PM
Hi,
I would appreciate if you can let me know where I can find installation details by Magnus Martensson.

I'm trying to install a Conexant/Rockwell PCI modem on Red Hat Linux 7.0.

When I untar the files posted in

http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html it creates a dir by the name PCI ...with a list of '.o' , '.inf' files etc. I would like to know what should i do from here.

Thanks for all your help.

Problems with Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem
by Joan Miquel Payeras Crespí (joan@screenart.es) on Sunday, December 10 @09:45AM
I have a Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem and I would like it working with Linux. It works currently in Windows 95.

I downloaded the modem driver from http://www.olitec.com/pub/HSF V1.01.02 K2.2.14.tar and I gzipped and untared it. I tried to execute the ins all script with the 2.2.16 kernel under RedHat 7.0. I had to make some changes (insmod --> insmod -f) to the script and I had to place a modified copy of the file C:WINDOWSINFCnx2013.inf (the one that corresponds to my modem). I reexecuted the ins all script and everything worked well.

I can communicate with my modem via AT commands with minicom. But I cannot dial any number. When I want to make an Internet connection with kppp I get the

Connexant modem
by Imran Ghory (ImranG@btinternet.com) on Thursday, December 28 @10:46AM
(I'm using Mandrake 7.0)

I've got my modem able to dial out using the Olitec driver, but I can't get it to connect to my ISP.

I don't know if this is because of a problem with the driver or with pppd. It dials my ISP's number, the ISP appears to accept to call and then nothing happens, after a short while I get "NO CARRIER" error, I think this is because my ISP has disconnected me.

Anyone know how I can find what's responsible (Driver or pppd problem) ?

Imran

Conexant SoftK56
by Stephen on Thursday, December 28 @04:32PM
This is what I did to make my Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem
work under linux, on my SuSE Linux 6.4 (Linux 2.2.14) system:
1. I downloaded the archive
http://www.olitec.com/pub/HSF V1.01.02 K2.2.14.tar
2. I did a "tar xfz HSF V1.01.02 K2.2.14.tar" on it.
You have to uncompress it even though there is no .gz
extension.
I then modified a couple of the files in the directory
created by tar:
3. I modified lin hsf.inf:
changed:
%HSFMODEM% = ModemX, PCIVEN 127A---so on
to:
%HSFMODEM% = ModemX, PCIVEN 14F1---so on
4. I modified ins all, changing every occurence of "insmod"
to "insmod -f"
5. You must run ins all sometime between starting your
computer and connecting.
That is all! I am using it right now!

Conexant modems
by Curtis (spectral raven@hotmail.com) on Monday, January 01 @07:06PM
Well I own a Sony Vaio PCG-F650. ANd I have a dreaded Conexant PCI modem. I found the driver for it and made the changes to the inf file and made the modifications for the kernel version mismatch... but when I run the install script I get an error check hfs install.log, when I look in the install log I see that it says the inf file is missing and it's not because I can see it in the directory. I checked olitechs page and it had a newer version that supposedly fixed that problem ( at least I think thats what it said the since the site was in french i had to translate it and im pretty sure thats what it said). So I downloaded it and installed it. Same problem. Does anyone know why i am getting this error? Is there a certain directory that I should put the files into for installation?

Olitec drivers and Debian
by Eduardo Fernández (efgonzalez@worldonline.es) on Saturday, January 06 @09:26AM
Hello
First: Do you know if the drivers for the Conexant winmodem (and now linmodem, too) work also with Debian? And what about the new 2.4.0 kernel?

Second: I've got RH 6.0 with kernel 2.2.14. I did everything I read with the drivers but I get disconnected 53 seconds with "no carrier". Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Eduardo

Olitec Driver
by Robert Baggen (R.Baggen@telebel.de) on Saturday, February 03 @01:24AM
Hi Deno,

I found that the Olitec Driver works with the German ELSA 56k PCI Modem which is a Winmodem with a Conexant/Rockwell HSF chipset. The only hacking needed in some of the config-Files was to change the PCI-VendorID provided by Olitec to 14f1 for ELSA. I run a RedHat 6.2 with Kernel 2.2.14.

Unfortunately the driver seems to be beta still, i had some mysterious chrashes, may be due to the driver.

Bye
Robert
