That's the problem.  Sportsters are just crappy, and not meant to be used
for "server usage".  But you could try to get a more recent firmware
version, maybe that helps.

You *could* try resetting the modem in the mgetty init-chat sequence
(ATZ), but I can't say whether that will help.
