William Penn was a member of the British aristocracy, and was expected
to wear a sword.  Upon becoming a pacifist Quaker, he asked George
Fox, founder of the Quaker religion, what to do about it.  George Fox
replied "Wear thy sword as long as thou canst."  He gave up the sword
within a few months.
