That's absurd.  Here's an experiment to do.  Take any mail order software
catalog (like PC Connection or Programmers' Shop).  Pick any 200 software
packages.  For each package, list the free version that is better.

The proprietary model is much better at attracting resources to produce
and enhance software. The result is an abundance of high quality software.
More software; better software.
