I have now seen several references to a software license called the
   "artistic license".  Can somebody point me at a copy?

The artistic license is included in the Perl release; I believe Larry
Wall is the author. It's around 120 lines; it's in the file
"src/Artistic" in any recent perl release. I can forward it to you if
you don't have a copy already. (Perl is released under *both* the GPL
and the Artistic License.)
