This is what the VorTeX project (at UCB, if I remember correctly) did,
back in 1986 or so.  I don't recall what became of it; I have vague
memories of it having some wierd licensing (something involving a
postscript output stage, hacking into a laserwriter, and a deal with
Adobe...)
