He may have heard of them.  I doubt he likes them. :-)

And he has a point.  There were some nobles who did something like
what he described (but using the Rhine river rather than a road).
Their heyday was over 700 years ago.  But the practice was so widely
disliked that they are *still* known as robber barons for it.
