What "might"?  While IBM and Sun (for starters) clearly "believe in
open source" in some sense or other, they are not FSBs in the sense of
building their businesses around freedom.  Their support for free
software is a matter of tactics rather their core competence.  And
certainly a large part of their funding of work on Linux, Eclipse, and
OpenOffice is about kneecapping Microsoft, as well as funding work of
practical use to themselves.  That surely fits your "cynic".
