We can wield openness as a powerful weapon against abuse of power,
abuse of privacy, and abusively-bad software. In the battle against
corruption, coercion, and needless complexity, nothing works better --
in the long term -- than giving more information to those working to
put things right.

Freedom and privacy can thrive, despite the coming age of ubiquitous
surveillance, if we insist on full disclosure of publicly-collected
data. Better software is emerging today through cooperation based on
full disclosure in the infosphere: open source code.

As Executive Director of Foresight Institute, Christine Peterson gets
to indulge her love of pattern recognition across disciplines. She
will argue that openness is the best path to a free, safe future with
software that actually works.
