Au contraire.  I make a substantial amount of income from enhancing
qmail, which comes, out of the box (or tarball if you will) as a
standards-compliant, perfectly functional Internet mailer.  Sometimes
these enhancements are changes to the source code, but most often they 
are add-on programs.
