Innovation comes in many forms, including totally new applications,
improvements to old applications, and even new ways of combining
old applications. Let's not restrict our definitions too tightly,
lest we throw out everything since the wheel!

Having said this, I would like to suggest a few Open Source projects
that strike me as including significant amounts of innovation:

   emacs Stallman
   gcc Stallman
   Icon Griswold
   patch Wall
   TeX, Metafont, etc.	Knuth
