In the usual ways.  Verifiability [analyze the code, or pay someone
smart to do it], reliability [improvement of common code base, many
eyes, etc], and durability [if AOL can't stay in business, somebody
else can pick up the debris and do something with it].

Open source authentication networks arguably will have a similar
effect on financial network growth that open source addressing and
service networks (ie, TCP/IP) had on the physical network's growth.
