Well, prototyping (and small-lot construction) is improved somewhat
with the advent of "3d printers" that produce voxels of
ABS-plastic... the MIT Media Lab, for example, has one or two of
them.  Expensive devices but you might be able to mooch access to one
at a university...  generally involves feeding it some CAD data file.

(what's the free software side of this? other than the lack of useful
free cad software?)
