Subject: free software; mechanized support?

I've been considering how to distribute an "operating system browser"
(see Meta, below). My current thought is to give the local software
away, in Open Source form, but charge for (XML) access to supplemental
information (eg, best and common practice, man pages for other systems)
which is not derivable from the local system.

In any case, I am curious to know about anyone who is using a "free
software/paid web services" business model.
