   effort applied to making 3 versions of a free debugger (I presume
   that's what ddd is) were applied to addressing the issues Peter
   mentioned, gdb might indeed be the best debugger.

What three debuggers?

There is gdb, and there are a couple of nice user interfaces that run
on top of gdb.  xxgdb is probably a dead end when you consider that
ddd exists.  For a while, it wasn't possible to run ddd on a system
which had only free software, because ddd required Motif; it now works
OK with Lesstif.

I suppose that for various reasons, it's good to have decent interfaces
for both working inside emacs not for not using emacs...
